Franklin D. Murphy Prize
In June of Spring Quarter, 2007, the David Geffen School of Medicine, the Department of History, and the Division of Honors, UCLA College of Letters and Science, will collaborate in awarding the 7th annual Franklin D. Murphy, M.D., Prize in the History of Medicine.
This award, which carries an honorarium of $1000, will be given for the best paper on the history of medicine written in an undergraduate class at UCLA taken in the Spring, Summer or Fall quarters of 2006, or in the Winter quarter of 2007. The committee may, at its discretion, award up to two Honorable Mentions, which would carry an honorarium of $200 each.
The essay can be of either a research or a critical nature. It must deal with the history of medicine, but that subject may be defined broadly: the scientific, social economic, biographical, ethical, literary and humanitarian aspects of medicine are all acceptable themes for a submission, as long as they are treated from an historical viewpoint. Although it is likely that the winning paper(s) will have been written in conjunction with a course that deals explicitly with the history of medicine, it needn’t neccessarily be the case. Any essay would qualify tht was written by an undergraduate for a UCLA course offered during the designated period.
The deadline for submission of entries is May 1, 2007 with delivery to be made to Professors Robert G. Frank, Jr. rfrank@ucla.edu or Dora B. Weiner dbweiner@ucla.edu.
